Medicare In-Home Telehealth Flexibilities Extended until December 31, 2027

 

Recent budget legislation extended Medicare telehealth flexibilities for non-behavioral health care until December 31, 2027, allowing for receipt of medical services in the home via both audio-only and visual technology. Note that for Medicare-funded behavioral health care, in-home telehealth is permanently authorized and not subject to expiration.

Background

 

Medicare telehealth flexibilities first became available during the COVID PHE in 2020 and were repeatedly extended through federal appropriations bills. The most recent Continuing Appropriations Act of 2026 extended telehealth flexibilities for in-home receipt of non-behavioral health care until December 31, 2027. All Medicare providers will be able to provide telehealth services for this time frame. There are no geographic restrictions for originating sites for Medicare telehealth services. Behavioral and mental telehealth services are permanently available to Medicare patients.
